The unrelenting heatwave in Europe has already broken records, with Austria experiencing its hottest July on record, followed by a new all-time high of 41.0C in Stammersdorf, Vienna, on August 4th, surpassing the 2003 record by 0.7C. The following day, Deutsch-Altenburg and Slovakia also set new records, with temperatures reaching 41.2C and 41.4C, respectively. This extreme heat is linked to a vertically extensive anticyclone, raising the freezing level above 4,000 meters across the Alpine region, accelerating glacier melting. Meanwhile, the opposite side of the Atlantic saw a record-breaking 51.8C in Badwater, California, the highest temperature in the US for 2026 so far.
However, the heatwave's impact isn't limited to Europe. Southeastern Europe has been relatively spared, but wildfires have ignited in recent days. Strong northerly wind gusts over 70mph caused power lines to sway and produce sparks, igniting fires in Greek Islands. Preveli beach's palm forest in Crete suffered damage, but the center of the forest was spared.
